First Thanksgiving

I took the week off for Thanksgiving last week. I went an entire five days without even turning on a computer, and it was fantastic.

Joe's family came to Golden for the holiday, and we had a great time celebrating Harper's first Thanksgiving. She had her own serving of squash and then took an uncharacteristically long nap for two hours while we all ate our dinner. I couldn't have planned it better. She enjoyed the squash, but she was a little unsure of the celebratory bib I made for her out of a footprint turkey she "made" at day care.

Besides her first Thanksgiving and a week with her aunt and grandparents, last week was a big one for Harper because she had her first finger food. We gave her some Puffs, which are little cereal puffs flavored with fruits or veggies that disintegrate immediately when they come in contact with water, or in this case, spit. She has quickly learned how to pick them up from her high chair tray (though still with a fist instead of a pincer grip, which means she only gets one in three in her mouth) and looks to you for another one immediately after one makes it into her mouth or disappears to her lap or the floor. Her reaction to the very first one that made it into her mouth, though, was much less pleasant. She was so trusting when she opened her mouth for Joe to put in the puff, but then she wasn't sure we'd been very kind.

And if visits, squash, strange bibs and finger foods wasn't enough, Harper also finally learned to sit up all by herself last week. She'd been close for weeks, and suddenly it was like someone flipped a switch and she could sit for ten minutes at a stretch all by herself. Even flinging toys around couldn't shake her new-found balance.
