This summer we worked on putting in a privacy fence and expanding the deck in our backyard. True to home improvement tradition, we expected this project to take about two months, and it took five. We didn't really run into problems to cause this delay: the days just got hotter and we got less interested in spending every weekend all weekend sweating in the backyard. We had intended to finish the deck in mid-July, so that we could host an end-of-season mixed doubles tennis team that ended up going to the state playoffs, but when it was the beginning of September and the deck still wasn't completely constructed we gave up on that idea. Maybe next year.
In addition to the sweat, Joe attacked this project with his customary installment of new, project-specific tools and wide array of cuss words. Sadly, he also sacrificed a fingernail to this project (and a significant dose of extra cuss words for that occasion). You can see the resulting black fingernail in our Eastern Europe pictures, and he's very proud to say that just this week the last remains of the broken nail are finally gone and a very wonky new fingernail is now in its place.
Next year, when it's warm again and we actually have some deck furniture to sit on, we'll toast to the sacrifice and the accomplishment. For now, we just have a giant pristine surface waiting to hold snow.
