Yesterday I charged $0.03 on my credit card for a pepper at the grocery store.
Every week I spend Sunday afternoons selecting recipes, making a list, and doing the grocery shopping. If I don't do this we spend the next week eating random boxed foods and/or various hunks of meat Joe pulls out of the freezer. I'd already done the grocery shopping for the week, but they didn't have any of the peppers I needed when I was there. So I stopped by yesterday afternoon to grab the one thing I needed for the evening meal (Vietnamese pork): a single, two-inch Serrano pepper.
I put it on the weight sensor at the self-checkout, typed in the product number and got my total bill. Out of habit I already had my credit card out and was halfway through swiping it when I realized that I was charging $0.03 and though I hardly ever have cash in my wallet I probably had three pennies I could have used. Since I use my credit card for just about every purchase (and then pay my entire bill each month--don't worry, Mom) I've charged some small amounts before--a pack of gum, a tube of Chapstick, a bottle of water--but I think this transaction definitely wins the award for my smallest charge ever.
Wow, I didn't even know you could charge such a small amount! I always feel guilty charging small amounts since I know the merchants pay interchange fees imposed by Visa and MC. I usually don't have cash either, though.
